What Are Cannabinoids? A Brief Introduction

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that naturally occur in hemp and Cannabis sativa plants. In addition to these plant-based compounds, the body also produces its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids.

Both interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, or ECS, a complex biological network involved in maintaining internal balance.

The Body’s Endocannabinoid System (ECS)

Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring compounds produced by the body that help regulate essential functions including mood, sleep, digestion and stress response.

The endocannabinoid system itself is made up of three key components:

• CB1 receptors, primarily located in the central nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord
• CB2 receptors, found in the peripheral nervous system, digestive system, and immune cells
• Enzymes, which break down endocannabinoids and cannabinoids after they’ve been used

These receptors are distributed throughout the body and help regulate functions including memory, pain response, motor control, mood, reward, and overall homeostasis.

When the body produces too few endocannabinoids, or cannot use them efficiently, imbalance may occur.

How Cannabinoids Support the ECS
